If you need to put your skip on a public highway or in a parking bay, you will need a skip licence.
By law, when hiring a skip you will need to arrange a skip permit or CPZ suspension if you plan to keep your skip on a public highway or parking area.
We have put together a short guide that will talk you through what they are, who will be eligible for one, and how much they cost.
Arranging a skip permit doesn’t have to be a hassle. Instead, we’ve answered the most frequently asked questions about skip permits.
1. What is a skip permit?
A lot of the time, you may need to put your skip outside your home and on a public highway or pavement. A skip permit allows you to do this. Skip permits are usually provided by your local council and they exist to control the number of skips placed on the road. These heavy metal containers take up a lot of space and can lead to traffic congestion, so the permits control this.
By choosing not to get a skip permit, you could risk being fined and the council could remove your skip at any time. However, if you want to put a skip on your property, driveway, or field, you will not need a skip permit!
2. Who can help me arrange my skip permit?
Quite often, Site Management Services will be able to determine if you will need one and organise the permit for you before your skip arrives. However, you may sometimes be required to contact your council directly and order it yourself depending on the area you’re in.
3. Are skip hire permits expensive?
Skip permits can incur additional costs and the costs will vary depending on whereabouts you are in the UK. Usually, Site Management Services can arrange this all for you and will add the additional charges onto the overall price of the skip hire.
4. How long does a skip permit last for?
Usually, the average skip permit lasts a couple of weeks; however, you can pay additional costs to extend the hire period of this permit. But you may face a fine if you keep a skip longer than the designated time period stated on your permit, so please make sure you hire a skip permit that allows you to hire a skip for as long as you need!
5. What will happen if I don’t get a skip permit?
As you will have your skip in a public place, enforcement officers will check to see if you have a skip permit and if not, then you will be hit with a hefty fine. Therefore, if you are planning on hiring a skip, you will need to look into a skip permit too if there’s no room for a skip on your driveway or property.
